Arthur Wellesley, First Duke of Wellington, was painted by Francisco Goya all through his time as a British typical serving in the Peninsular War in Spain. To Wrightsman’s proposal, the Wolfson Basis donated $100,000 and the federal government included a exclusive Treasury grant of $40,000, resulting in the painting’s acquisition and its first general public display at the Nationwide Gallery in London.

It was stolen on August 21, 1961, 19 days immediately after it was documented missing.

The photograph and its frame ended up later retrieved and Kempton Bunton admitted to stealing them in July 1965.
