In conjunction with the exhibition Lee Alexander McQueen: Thoughts, Mythos, Muse, renowned scholars will discover creativity, creative course of action, and innovation in trend and art to even further take a look at the interdisciplinary impulse that outlined McQueen’s career, legacy, and resources of inspiration.
The bullfight, or corrida, motivated McQueen’s Spanish-affected Spring/Summer time 2002 collection, The Dance of the Twisted Bull. The costume of the male matador educated the collection’s silhouettes, with accents drawn from the classic costume of woman flamenco dancers. McQueen interpreted the corrida from an outsider’s viewpoint, but followed in the footsteps of Spanish artists Francisco de Goya and Pablo Picasso, who the two drew on the bullfight in their very own practices. Co-curator Clarissa M. Esguerra elaborates on McQueen’s assortment, though Britt Salvesen, Curator and Head of the Wallis Annenberg Images Division and the Prints and Drawings Section, discusses Goya and Picasso’s artistic processes in making their respective La Tauromaquia print series.
